  • Go around re: proposals and current thoughts
  • Outline of course schedule, participation and assignments


Saturday, Sept. 12

9:30 – 12:00 AM

  • Ashok on Critical Pedagogy Readings
  • Norm on Critical Theory:     Reading     PowerPoint
  • Critical Thinking Groupwork/Exercise

1:00 – 3:30 PM

  • Invited students from previous cohort present on the process of completing their thesis or project research, from starting the program to their defense. Discussion with instructors, student presenters, and current students.


Assignment: students revisit their earlier proposals (written in Patrick’s class), and write a short reflection on how they are thinking of changing, progressing, discarding/re-doing these proposals. Submission of this due by Sept. 28th.

  • General discussion / group work related to students’ reflections on their earlier proposals, and development of revised proposals


Saturday, Nov. 21

9:30 – 12:00

  • Presentation by guest expert in experimental/statistical methods
  • Presentation by ethics committee member to discuss ethics approvals.

1:00 – 3:30 PM

  • Presentation and discussion on research and project design by Norm and Ashok
  • Discussion/Group work: Discussion of what you read in Cresswell, of your research design, and of how this may have changed or been reinforced.

  • 7 pm: Gary Hunt's presentation on doing surveys for research
  • 8 pm: Group work to share further developments on proposals

  • 9:30 am: Presentation on posters (Ashok, with added comments from Norm) Presentation on Posters
  • 10:30: Walk over to the Centre for innovation in Culture and the Arts in Canada (CiCAC) to see posters from previous cohort and field queries on formats etc

1:00 – 3:30

  • 1 pm: Aruna Srivastava: presentation on ethics, pedagogy & the academy
  • 2 pm: End notes, observations

February 1-27: Online Activity

  • February 8-14: Chapter 7 of Research Design (Cresswell, 2009)
  • February 20-27: Chapter 8-10 of Research Design (Cresswell, 2009)

  • Research-Creation colloquium. Guest researcher, including four Canada Research Chairs in research-creation will discuss the value of creative research methodologies. This colloquium will be open to ED507 students and the general public.
