Letter from Pestalozzi to a friend on his work at Stans
This is a classic text in the study of education, which appears to have long gone out of print in the English language. The text reproduced here comes from a translation that dates back to the late 19th century (i.e. has entered into the public domain).
Personal Help for Children Growing Up
By M. J. Langeveld, 1974 "The child seems to be such a natural product that man for many centuries has been occupied by everything else other than the question: what to do with parenthood, what to do with a child. It is only a few years ago that we discovered that the upbringing of a child is not a self-evident matter, of an inborn human instinct, and that a mother who had never lived through the experience of being educated, is completely helpless in the education of her own children. We know that the history of the mother and the child is one of the tragic aspects of human history. Death has been their chief attendant. And we know that the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded at Philadelphia in 1823 and that the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children only came a good fifty years later (in 1874)."
